All of us have our favorite railroads and mine happens to be the L&N. Growing up in Louisville in the 1950's gave me a strong interest in the last of steam and the first generation diesels of L&N. On this page I'll feature photos from that period. Some of these are colorized versions of black and white originals. I hope you like these.

Select

L&N DeCoursey Yard Roundhouse, 1959. Look closely at the roundhouse and you'll see a few M1 2-8-4's sticking out with no tenders. L&N kept the tenders and cut the cab roof extensions off before turning some of the engines and coupling them back to back with their drawbars before sending them to the scrappers in Cincinnati.

L&N 2-8-2 1786, class J-4. This engine is performing steam heat duty at Louisville on a string of cars in for the Kentucky Derby. Note the disconnected valve gear. The date on this one is not on the slide but it must be either 1955 or 1956.

L&N M1 class 2-8-4 1962, Louisville Union Station, Derby Day, May, 1956. Looking grungy at best, L&N's last steam Derby Day appearance was in 1956.

L&N 1962, M1 class 2-8-4, Louisville Union Station, May, 1956 Derby Day. A film sequence from this same event is in Reflections of American Railroading, video number 006. That video features several Louisville railroads in the early to mid- 1950's. Among them: L&N, Southern, B&O, ICRR, Monon.

L&N 2-8-4 1962, class M1, Ravenna, Ky. July, 1956. Looking much better than she did her May Ky. Derby appearance, in July, 1956, she was assigned to a Cincinnati - Ravenna excursion. Here, she rides the Ravenna turntable.
